They've provided me with countless hours of humor and headbanging since early high school, and I own all their records, so obviously it was really cool to sit down and chat with them. Really nice guys, too (surprisingly).

Wow, so I kinda stopped posting here for about a month....I'm just posting this past week's radio programs because there were a lotta half-assed ones in-between. Allllllright, on to Forte. I had lots of new stuff built up for this week, including a brand new release by legendary doom-metallers Pentagram. This album is special because it's the reunion of the guitarist and the vocalist or something. I dunno. Pentagram changes members like most people change underwear. I just know this is the most rockingest shit I've heard these fellas do in a long time. Some of this album rivals mid-80's stuff even. It doesn't come close to the 60's and 70's demos, but what does? Anyhow, the album is called 'Last Rites' and I would strongly advise you to pick it up.

...and lastly, I've finally got another download for y'all.
It's not very often that I find an album that's a) really cool and b) so goddamn obscure that I can't even find it. So, to start off, I was watching a b-grade science fiction film called 'Bad Channels' (it's a Full Moon pictures...more on this in the weeks to come, because I'm hopefully going to write an article comparing Full Moon with Troma Studios). The plot largely involves music, and there were a couple of what I would call music videos throughout the movie. One of these was by the rather unfortunately-named group Sykotik Sinfoney. Okay, so anybody in their right mind would probably see this band name and not even give them the time of day. But, in this case, I saw/heard them before reading the credits and finding out who they were.

I figured it would be something easy to go download, but surprisingly, there is very little info on these guys online. They were 'ahead of their time,' according to their own crappy homepage, and they have recently released a compilation of all their recordings called 'Eargasm,' which I am bringing to you now. Apparently they didn't have any proper releases in their heyday (the early '90's) aside from the 'Bad Channels' soundtrack.

So then. On to the music. The first thing I thought, upon seeing these guys decked out in goofy costumes and playing a combo of thrash, funk, circus and hair metal, was that they were a poor man's Mr. Bungle. The lyrics are often laughably bad, and the tempo/time changes are executed kinda clumsily, but goddamn, these guys actually write some pretty good tunes. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, these recordings are mostly from the late 80's/1990, and Mr. Bungle's first proper LP wasn't released until '91 or '92. Sooooo, either these fellas were big on local Eureka, CA bands, or they just happened to be influenced by the same groups that influenced Bungle (Oingo Boingo is a definite point of reference, as is early Chili Peppers, Frank Zappa, Slayer, GWAR, Devo, Funkadelic and Pantera). Whatever the case, this compilation is definitely worth a spin, and there was an alt-metal group called D.M.T. on the 'Bad Channels' soundtrack that was pretty decent, too. No luck finding their album, however.

Forte 20, featuring Epitaph's EP 'These Rotten Remains'

Couldn't find much info on these guys...apparently they're from Illinois. The EP is kind of like what a thrash metal album played by Jesus Lizard or Shellac might sound like. Odd, jerky rhythms, buzzsaw guitars, and a singer who really doesn't sound like a thrash vocalist at all. I dunno. I thought it was kinda neat, and it was only a 4-song EP, so I played the whole thing. Also of note was the fact that I got a shit-ton of requests in the last half of the show.

Forte 18, featuring Burzum's album 'Fallen'

If you've continued listening to Forte since I took over as host, odds are you like (or at least don't mind) Burzum. To me, Burzum isn't just one of the most innovative and original metal bands of the past couple decades, but they're one of the only groups in modern music that I find consistently enjoyable. This record doesn't come out in Norway til next week, and doesn't even reach America until April, so you might as well check out my podcast and hear the shit while you can.

That being said, here's my take on 'Fallen':

While 2010's 'Belus' was pretty subdued (for Burzum) and featured more emphasis on melody and intricate guitar parts than any other release, 'Fallen' sounds like Varg is getting angry again. The recording reminds me of older Burzum releases (pre-'Filosofem') where the idea was to do shit as lo-fi as possible. Maybe that's just the bad rip I have, but this sounds like a much 'dirtier' record to me. That being said, Varg has also continued to use his 'real' singing voice--something which first appeared on 'Belus.' Before that, it was all black metal screams and the occasional quiet talking part. There are full-on HARMONIES on this record. What the hell? There are also fewer 'ambient' pieces than on the last couple Burzum releases, which is fine by me. I like the stuff, but I pretty much just use it to fall asleep. I don't care about any of the murder or jail shit anymore, this guy is a great musician and he continues to prove it with each release.

Forte 17, featuring Dead Horse's album 'Peaceful Death and Pretty Flowers'

You remember these guys, right? I hope so. I've played them countless times on Obscuro, and periodically during my tenure as Forte's host as well. Now you get to hear the whole goddamn album.

Dead Horse was formed in the late 80's by Michael Haaga and his friends in Houston, TX. Maybe it's just the Texas connection, but to me these guys sound like if the Butthole Surfers started a thrash metal band. Weird interludes, bizarre humor, musical left-turns, and lots more stuff that doesn't really fit into the 'thrash' genre. They only cut two full lengths (two EP's also) and it was really hard to pick which one to play. The first one, 'Horsecore' is a little more thrash (and a little funnier) but it also has a lot more cursing, so it was just easier to play 'Peaceful Death.' Aside from the Horse, I played lots of 'classic' metal cuts to suit the early-90's mood of the album.

So, I got a letter in my mailbox at the WIDR offices...apparently it dates back to 1999 (probably during former host Aaron's tenure) and concerns a very religious, very angry man who wanted Forte pulled from the airwaves for being 'university-funded Satanism.' Check it out...Armand Schaubroeck's rare 'live' album (it's fake). As far as I can tell, the only albums of his that are on the internet right now are 'Ratfucker' and 'A Lot of People Would Like to See Armand Schaubroeck...DEAD.' It's just as fucked as you'd think it is, and now it can be YOURS!

For those that don't know, Armand is a proto-punk musician from NY who got arrested for B and E at a young age and then proceeded to write a whole bunch of angry albums about it between 74 and 79. His records are peppered with foul language that's pretty unusual for the time, because Armand didn't need music at all to make money. He's much more well-known as the owner of House of Guitars, a very strange music shop in NY.

Here we go. I played a cut off this on the Alternate Universe Metal Program. A while back, I played one of Duane Warr's albums on Obscuro! He plays all the instruments on his records, and has a style that's kind of like a darker, weirder Black Sabbath. Legend has it that, after having a religious experience, Duane disowned his older albums for a while (he did NOT burn all the copies like some people say) but now he seems pretty cool with them (a couple have been re-released on Drag City.) This is one of his more recent outings (I think '97 but I'm not sure,) and it IS a pretty religious-themed record, but don't let that stop you from checking this one out. This is even noisier than 1986's 'Animals.' For God's sake, give this man your money.

This one is for the 3, maybe 4 folks who've told me they miss the Obscuro! radio show. I played pretty much all the insane, deranged, twisted heavy metal I've found doing the show (and some cuts from the Obscuro! days, too) and put them into one 3-hour block of totally fucked radio. ...about Cleveland rocking, that is. Here's a compilation I found that provides a pretty good snapshot of the Cleveland proto-punk scene in the early 70's and three of its best groups (Mirrors, electric eels, and the Styrenes.)

We'll be playing some of this on Society's Fault this week, but here's the whole thing. Mirrors is kind of like later Velvet Underground, the Styrenes have an almost Syd Barrett-feel to them, and the eels are just fucked. If you're not familiar with this group, they're definitely worth hearing even despite never cutting any 'actual' records (almost all of their recordings are practice-space demos recorded through a busted PA head.) The group only played about 6 shows, each one ending in multiple arrests/being banned from the club, and they eventually put each other in the hospital and broke up. Yup. Violent fuckin' dudes. The music is something like early punk rock filtered through backwoods-free-jazz...I dunno. It's weird stuff.

gONNA gET gOT - Mixtapes on Acid, Vol. 1
I dunno if I mentioned this one...I did a whole feature on this group and their previous incarnation The O a while back, but his newest release is pretty good, too. It's not AS good as some stuff, but whatever. It's not really a mixtape...it's just a regular album with songs that kind of flow together. A couple are really good and a few are way too poppy for my taste.

That album 'The Bad Wife' by Julie Christmas was pretty cool, too.

I dunno...I'm listening to this split by Oranssi Pazuzu and Candy Cane and it's pretty awesome. At least the Oranssi stuff is. They were featured for a brief moment on Forte a few weeks ago for their fusion of Can/Faust-style jamming with black metal. This stuff is pretty similar to their 2009 album.

Shit, I really don't know beyond that. I hate music.

Obscuro! Mixtape #6...'Shut Up, J. Mascis, aka Humor in Music'

Don't get me wrong. I love Dinosaur Jr. But...I definitely don't agree with J. Mascis' assertion that 'humor does not belong in music.' I can't really back this up right now, but I read an interview a few years ago where he said something like that in regards to groups like Ween and the Dead Milkmen. I've always thought that, when done right, humor and music make an excellent match, so here's a mix of funny songs for you. Intentionally funny, that is. Some of these groups are serious groups, and others tend to do more comedic than serious songs. Front and back cover, just like last time. Be forewarned: Some of this shit is DEFINITELY X-rated material.

1. Butt Trumpet - "I'm Ugly and I Don't Know Why" - Primitive Enema, 1994
Sloppy musicianship, dueling girl/guy vocals...no, we're not talking about Beat Happening...this is x-rated punk group Butt Trumpet's ONLY single (as far as I know.) You can tell with song titles like 'Dead Dogs in My Garage' that these guys/gals have a real immature sense of humor. Classic novelty of the grunge era.

2. Pansy Division - "Bill and Ted's Homosexual Adventure" - Pile Up, 1995
Green Day brought these fellas along on their first major US tour...I wonder what the hundreds of drunk frat boys thought of this. Pansy Division perfectly combine catchy pop songs with over-the-top queercore lyrics. 80% of the time they're being hilarious, but then they'll turn out depressing tunes like 'Deep Water.' Cool guys. I like 'em a lot. Not in THAT way, though..

3. Goldie Lookin' Chain - "HRT" - Safe as Fuck, 2005
An 8-member Welsh rap group that tackles important issues like buying cheap hash, trading said hash for Indian takeout food, and of course, wearing tracksuits. I think the joke is on the listener in this case, because there's no way these guys are really that dumb. Especially considering how 'intelligent' some of the music is. This one was particularly humorous to me because I remember DARE officers in junior high telling us that if you smoked pot too much you'd grow tits.

4. Dead Milkmen - "Taking Retards to the Zoo" - Big Lizard in My Backyard, 1985
What comedy-music compilation would be complete without these guys? One of the longest running, and funniest punk groups with a sense of humor...this was the very first song I heard by them, and it won me over big time. It's short, and to the point, and how can you hate the smirky, bored tone of Rodney Anonymous? The Milkmen are the coolest.

5. The Frogs - "Baby Greaser George" - It's Only Right and Natural, 1989
The Frogs are one of my favorite bands, hands down. They're great musicians, and who else could make shit like this up ON THE SPOT? This tune is WAY X-rated, as are many of their best ones. If you think the idea of a pedophile orally raping a baby and getting his dick bit off is funny, then you WILL enjoy this song.

6. Heathen Dan - "I Like" - World's Worst Records, Vol. 1, 1983
I have no idea where this song comes from, who recorded it, or why they recorded it. All I know is that it's on this 'World's Worst Records' compilation, which should really be called 'Worlds BEST Records.'

7. Ween - "Reggaejunkiejew (Live)" - At the Cat's Cradle, 1992
An early live recording by these two creeps. Another classic group of comedy-rock that proves humor and music DO belong together. The brothers Ween are geniuses...although this might not be the best example of that. Try 'The Mollusk' LP if you don't believe me.

8. Crispin Hellion Glover - "Auto-Manipulator" - The Big Problem Does Not Equal the Solution. The Solution Equals Let it Be, 1989
Considering his only record veers from noisy sound collages to spoken word, to offbeat rap songs like this...it's pretty obvious that 'Back to the Future' star Crispin Glover is a fucking wild man. It's even more obvious if you've seen the two films he's directed and tours the country promoting. Considering that he pretty much only plays psychotic roles, and is a VERY awkward (albeit very nice) person to talk to, I'd say it's not all just an act...

9. Anal Cunt - "311 Sucks" - I Like it When You Die, 1997
They do. Seth Putnam is the stand-up comedian of heavy metal.

10. Bloodhound Gang - "She Ain't Got No Legs" - Use Your Fingers, 1995
Okay, if you don't think these guys are funny in some respect, you're probably just an asshole. Music critics, I'm looking at you. How come every review of the Gang is a shitty one? Jimmy Pop is a lot more clever than people give him credit for. That being said, this song is stupid as fuck, and also very crude. But, listen very closely and you'll hear a pretty accurate recreation of The Cure's 'Close to Me' in the background. Legend has it that Robert Smith hand-wrote a nasty letter to the Bloodhounds upon being asked for permission to use his song. Rob just doesn't get the joke...

11. MC Trachiotomy - "Angel Dust" - ...w/ Love from Tahiti, 2002
Not sure what to say about this one, but I think it's funny...deconstructionist/crackhead rap music made by some psycho from New Orleans.

12. Sun City Girls - "Pornoshop" - Horse Cock Phepner, 1987
The Sun City Girls aren't really a joke band, but they do their fair share of 'humor' tunes. Especially on this record. Basically, when they're not covering Egyptian surf songs or making gamelan sounds with their guitars, they're making fun of politics and censorship. This is another X-rated tune.

13. Zoogz Rift - "Sit down and Shut Up" - Ipecac, 1984
Kinda like a more foul-mouthed Frank Zappa, this dude plays all the instruments and talks crazy shit. He was also a wrestler, I think.

14. Mindless Self Indulgence - "Pussy All Night" - Tight, 1999
Alright, so MSI got pretty shitty in recent years, but there was a time when they were cranking out hilarious electro-rap-punk classics. This is from their first LP, which is apparently out of print for some reason. Too bad. I used to have it, but I lost it.

15. MC Potbelly - "Santa is Dead" - My Favorites, ???
This is a middle-aged accountant who can't really rap and probably thinks he's a lot funnier than he is. That's not to say he ISN'T funny.

16. Frank Zappa - "Broken Hearts are For Assholes" - Sheik Yerbouti, 1979
The godfather of comedy-rock, with a hilarious mid-period song. I like Zappa best when he's making jokes like this and not fucking around with classical music.

17. MC Paul Barman - "Talking Time Travel" - Paullelujah!, 2002
Usually Paul is MCing, but here he's kinda talking over some weird folk samples. His raps are extremely clever, but for some reason this track made me laugh the hardest.

18. Freddie Blassie - "Pencil Neck Geek" - I Bite the Songs, 1975
A one-time world-famous wrestler who loved calling people geeks, Freddie decided to take his token phrase to the music world. I'm sure glad he did. This song is hilarious, and was even covered by Mr. Bungle at several shows.

19. Ugly Duckling - "Meatshake" - Taste the Secret, 2003
This is from the group's concept album about a fictitious fast food chain that serves nothing but meat. It takes some truly twisted minds to even come up with the idea of a milkshake made out of meat (I think) and they execute the idea very well. Just goofy, silly fun. Probably the tamest song on here, but also one of the funniest.

20. Fat Boys - "Don't You Dog Me" - S/T, 1984
Maybe the Fat Boys aren't a joke band, but they're definitely a novelty act. How else can you explain 3 huge guys rapping about how much food they can eat? This song turned up in the 'Krush Groove' movie, too, which is a really fucking cool movie.

21. The Presidents of the United States of America - "Boll Weevil" - S/T, 1995
Probably the most successful comedy-rock group in recent times...I grew up on this shit, and it's still funny. Unlike some of the groups on here, the humor doesn't overtake the quality of the music.

Here is the Divine Styler's 1991 album 'Spiral Walls Containing Autumns of Light.' This is more 'rap' stuff (if you can really call it that) like the New Kingdom post last week...but batshit in a completely different way. If you've heard the Styler's late-80's B-boy raps, this album doesn't make much sense (especially considering it came out only like 2 years later.) I think you could only call maybe 3-4 tunes on here 'rap' songs, and the rest of them walk the line between Prince-style funk, industrial noise-scapes, heavy metal, spoken word, and pretty much anything else experimental. What was this dude on? Probably acid.

Okay, so I just dug this CD out of the dirtpile and figured I would throw it up here. It's one of the (in my opinion) best recordings I've ever played on. Too bad we never found a bassist and disintegrated after about 3 months of playing. The group was called Apres Cote...which I think means 'before coast' in French, but it sounds kinda like Apricot if you say it, which was our intent. This is a 5-song EP, partly done live to 2-track reel tape and partly done in Pro-Tools. Quality stuff, I reckon. We even pretended it was 1973 to all our friends to suit our 'retro' vibe. It probably wasn't much fun for anybody but us.

Occasionally, I put up some of my own music for download here. This time, it actually overlaps with previous program on WIDR (Obscuro!--where this site's name comes from)...sort of. A lot of the oddball shit I gathered for that program came from THIS website. This dude does an 'incorrect music' program on WFMU in Jersey and looks for all types of homemade stuff to post on his site/play on his show. I was actually turned onto this site by a fellow WIDR DJ (J-Unit from the Deuce Project, I do believe) and thought it would probably be a good outlet for some of my recording endeavors. I sent Mr. Cummings a 2-disc set of my recordings under the guise of The HATE Noise, and he wrote back, wondering if we could do two compilations--one of sociopathic rap jams (which I had plenty of) and one of musical crank calls (there was only one of these on the original disc.)

So, we put up the rap stuff.

...then I took my damn sweet time organizing a few crank-call sessions. Here are the results. Apparently, they're so funny that we get to do another round (or two, or three!)

Both these posts have full-length album downloads, and apparently they're getting around because one of our rap tunes turned up in some beer-brewing guy's podcast, and like 3200 people have listened to the shit. Crazy.

Seriously. I just heard this record yesterday...'Paradise Don't Come Cheap' by New Kingdom. It was on a list of 'different' rap albums, much like the Sensational stuff I put up a while back. I think this one takes the cake on the weirdness factor, though. The beats aren't so much beats as they are noisy bongwater sound collages, and the two dudes don't so much rap as they rasp and growl incomprehensibly about whatever the fuck they want. Plus every song is sloooooooooooowwwwwwww and kinda dizzy-feeling. Check out the lyricals:

Bizarro Jerry's Kutout Bin Klassics, Vol. 6

...and look at that shit. Three posts in one day. That's probably a new record for the site. So here we have Lazy's second album 'The Lazy Music Group.' I don't care for the first one too much...it's just a Beat Happening ripoff that's kinda boring overall. This one, however, is a LOT different. I love pretty much all mid-90's grunge-rock bands that got signed to a major for one record then broke up, so maybe I'm biased, but these guys (er...girls and guy) are like Beat Happening with the balls of Dinosaur Jr or something. It's weird hearing this because the formula is pretty similar stylistically to my own group, Coma Nova. The dude yells and plays nasty-loud guitar, and the girl sings weird lyrics in a plain voice. Some of the songs are a little repetitive, but 1, 3, 6, 7, 9 and 11 are all terrific. Released in 1996 on Roadrunner Records for some reason.

Forte 8, too much black metal? Not likely!

...but there sure was a fucking lot of it! That's the way we like it here at Forte. I played 4 cuts from the album 'Muukalainen Puhuu' by Oranssi Pazuzu, a Finnish group that walks the line between traditional black metal and kraut-rock like Can and Faust. What the fuck, right? It's an interesting mix for sure. I would say everybody into progressive music of any sort should check these guys out. Probably the most original thing I've heard in the past few months. Beyond that, just a whole lot of strange stuff and a really long doom-rock cut.

The Cure

I've been listening to pretty much exclusively The Cure for the past couple of weeks, and have no plans to change my listening habits anytime soon.

It's been a good half-decade since I seriously sat down and listened to their music, and even sold off a lot of my old Cure CD's in that time. Now I kinda wish I hadn't. For a while it was 'oh, the old punk stuff is good and so is 'The Top' but everything else sucks,' then 'I guess 'Disintegration' is pretty cool, too,' then, 'oh fuck it, it's all good, even the stuff that isn't.'

So, on that note, here is how I NOW rank The Cure's discography from favorite to least favorite:

The Top (1984)
Not too typical of the 'Cure' sound, but what album is, really? This one is by far the weirdest and hardest listen, but maybe that's why it's still my favorite overall. Or maybe it's because there are the doom and gloom tracks ('Shake Dog Shake')AND the upbeat pop tracks ('The Caterpillar'.) It sounds like Robert Smith on acid, and apparently that's exactly what it is (as he was using LSD daily at this point)

Disintegration (1989)
I used to hate this record for some reason...thought it was kinda boring and dated-sounding. Now I see that's not the case at all, and that 'Plainsong' is even heavier than the heaviest Electric Wizard tracks. Seriously. Turn those synths into distorted guitars and see what happens.

Seventeen Seconds (1980)
This was close...and honestly, this is probably one of the lesser-listened-to albums of theirs, but the overall mood can't be beat. I would put it further down on the list, but in the right time and place, this one is aces.

Three Imaginary Boys/Boys Don't Cry (1979)
These two are together because it's basically the same record, give or take a couple tracks. If you compile them all together, it makes one big great punk record. Simple songs with really odd lyrics and arrangements. Listening to this, it's no surprise why these guys got so many second chances (and they almost always disappoint some people, which is another reason why I like them so much--that they're not afraid to do this.)

The Head on the Door (1985)
A pop record...kind of...this is one of the albums most people know. Everything on it is great, even the tracks that weren't singles. I especially like 'Push.'

Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987)
To me, this and 'Head' are pretty much interchangeable, although this one is a good deal longer. Same mood, same types of songs, etc.

Bloodflowers (2000)
The more I listen to this album, the more I like it. Similar to 'Disintegration' but with more 'modern' production techniques. It'll probably end up moving up in the list someday. Maybe. Ha.

Pornography (1982)
Used to hate this one, too...it's not so bad, really. REALLY dark stuff, but the best songs on it are perhaps some of the Cure's best songs overall.

Japanese Whispers (1983)
This isn't really an 'album,' but it is 8 songs that don't appear on any other release (other than their respective singles.) THIS is the only Cure album that really sounds dated to me now, with all the cheesy synths, but 'Lovecats' is so damn good.

Wish (1992)
Good, not great. That's all I gotta say about it. The singles are good, and a couple other tracks stand out.

Faith (1981)
Never got into this one too much. Still don't like it all that well. It sounds too much like a 'lesser' version of 'Seventeen Seconds'--like those songs without the cool vocals effects and mood pieces. I gave it multiple tries. Oh well. Not every one is a winner.

Wild Mood Swings (1996)
Gonna have to re-listen to this one, too, but it's kind of like 'Wish' in that nothing really stands out too much. 'Mint Car' is a really gay song and I don't like it too much.

I haven't listened to their two most recent albums (4:13 Dream and S/T) so I can't really say anything about those. Didn't like what I heard from S/T, but what I heard from 'Dream' wasn't all that bad.

...once again, just 'cuz some of these are lower on the totem pole, that doesn't mean I HATE them, per se. I actually appreciate all the music Robert Smith has created, and I think he's one of the best living songwriters. Obviously not every song he writes is a home run, but for how many albums his band has done, I'd say they're pretty much untouchable.

...also, as an honorary mention, 'The Exploding Boy' doesn't appear on any album but the 'Join the Dots' B-Sides collection, and is my FAVORITE Cure song of all time. It almost moves that compilation to the top, even though some of it isn't that good. Actually, the first disc is about 80% great. 'Mr. Pink Eyes,' a b-side from 'The Top,' is another favorite of mine.

The list, overall, is a little inaccurate too, because it probably varies from day to day. For example, today I've been rocking 'Bloodflowers' nonstop, and haven't even given a thought to 'Kiss Me x3.' Oh well.

Pretty soon here, I'm gonna post a collection of lo-fi Cure covers that myself and the Coma Nova folk have been putting together. Some are pretty straightforward, others not so much.

Now go out there and give your entire paycheck to Robert Smith in exchange for these wonderful albums.

Well, if you haven't guessed from past posts (i.e. this Halloween one), I am just as into movies (good ones) as I am to music. And, if you could guess from the content of this site, most of the movies I watch are out-of-the-ordinary in some way...mostly because ordinary stuff is pretty boring. I hope that doesn't sound 'pretentious,' because I love 'Airheads' just as much as I love 'Gummo.'

Anyhow, here are a few films I've watched recently (some old and some new) that I thought were worth mentioning.
Cemetery Man (1994)
REALLY odd film I watched accidentally when trying to find a good horror film on the night of Halloween. It's actually a whole lot more than that. There are elements of comedy, romance, satire, drama, and surrealism as well. Plus, it's just a damn good story. A caretaker at a cemetery and his basically-mute sidekick have to 'kill' the dead, who awake after 7 days of being in the ground. Along the way, he meets the love of his life (several times) and kills her each time.
Trash Humpers (2009)
Newest 'film' from Harmony Korine, who brought us 'Gummo' (awesome) and the screenplay for 'Kids' (hated it). I always give this fella a chance because a) he's almost certainly batshit crazy and b) 'Gummo' was such a fucked-up and cool movie. This one, while not nearly as cool as that, is still pretty badass. Basically a 'home video'-type film that features a bunch of broken segments of some elderly people fucking shit up and talking smack to each other and young kids. I'm not really sure what the underlying message is, but it looks like Harmony and co. had fun making this, and there are some really creepy and disturbing scenes.The Dark Backward (1991)
Dunno how I never heard of this one before. It's the writer/director of 'Detroit Rock City' (although it's nothing like that film) and it features Bill Paxton and Judd Nelson. It's about two garbage men, one a horrible stand up comic and the other a pushy weirdo with an accordion, and their trials and tribulations on the way to stardom (including a number of fat women and an arm growing out of Judd Nelson's back). Weird weird weird, fucking weird. But good.

Bizarro Jerry's Kutout Bin Klassics, Vol. 5

As promised, here are BOTH albums by San Francisco-based grunge-punk group Protein. (I know I said in the last post that they were from Texas...they actually relocated to Texas and former lead man Josh Zee's new band is based there.) I would post the Wikipedia article here in link-form, but it's all of three sentences, so basically all we know about these guys is that they were all kicked out of the same high school at the same time and decided to start a band with their downtime. That's a pretty fitting beginning for dudes who've got lines like 'I walk by your house extra slow under my hood, it seems like it would be interesting to sneak in kill you, but I never would' and 'you can pray all the way to satan everyday, but I'll say I don't worship anything but me.'

As I said before, if people weren't such fucking idiots, these guys would have been the next Nirvana. You can argue that lead man Josh Zee isn't nearly the songwriter that Kurt Cobain was, but then listen to "Passing By" from the 2nd album, or "Duct Tape On My Hat" from the 1st. This guy isn't just a flashy guitarist with a bad attitude. It's really disappointing that, when their major label deal fell through, these guys disbanded, but Zee is in a not-half-bad country band (I hate country, but I can at least stand this stuff) called the Mother Truckers.

Obviously, I can't conclude this brief little review without mentioning that guitar. That fucking guitar. How many times did Josh Zee sit in his room playing along with his Van Halen records until he had the solos perfect? The world may never know, but this is a guy who loves his guitar. Imagine the mind-fuckingly original capabilities of Buckethead, but without the shitty music (Deli Creeps aside). It's like 'here's some great songs, and oh, by the way CRAAAAZY SOLO RIGHT IN YOUR FUCKING FACE.' I guarantee you'll never hear another band quite like this, and it's a shame that they've been relegated to cutout bin status (both of these albums are, as far as I can tell, out of print). The 2nd album has a little bit more country-twang and less blazing solos than the first, but it also has better production and (arguably) more mature songwriting.

To me, this is what Nirvana would have been like, had Kurt embraced his redneck upbringings and grew up trying to learn Van Halen solos note for note instead of trying to butt fuck the Melvins. Not saying that's a bad thing, but that's just what it sounds like. Totally over-the-top guitar wizardry, alternately creepy and hilarious lyrics, and catchy grunge-punk tunes. I love 'em, and apparently both of their albums are out of print (and, to my knowledge, have not been posted ANYWHERE on the internet yet) so you can expect them here momentarily.

Forte 6, new stuff by Electric Wizard, Atheist and Ghost

Normally I don't get really excited about new releases because most music that comes out sucks, but the last couple weeks were an exception. So, I played 4 cuts from 3 new releases I thought kicked some serious ass.

You can see my review of Electric Wizard's 'Black Masses' in the post previous to this one. Besides that, I played 4 cuts from Atheist's new (released on the 8th) album 'Jupiter,' their first since 93(?)'s 'Elements' (which wasn't all that great.) THIS one, however, finds the return of the Atheist from the classic 'Unquestionable Presence,' with more emphasis on the vocal stylings of Kelly Schafer (who is now just a vocalist, instead of guitarist and vocalist...he's got carpal tunnels.) There aren't any 'new' sounding effects or production techniques (like on the new Cynic album), which I really appreciate because I hate that shit.

Also, I played 4 cuts from Ghost's debut release, 'Opus Eponymous.' This isn't the same Japanese Ghost that plays psychedelic rock, obviously. This is a bunch of mysteriously unknown black metal guys from Scandinavia (maybe the fellas in Repugnance? Who knows...) who play, what sounds to me, like ELO doing the vocals for tunes played by Cathedral that King Diamond wrote. Huh? Odd, melodic, over-the-top satanic, and HEAVY rock music. I like it a lot.

Album Review - Electric Wizard's "Black Masses"

I love Electric Wizard...they're just so hateful, and so slow. Any record by them is the ultimate 'put it on and watch everybody in the room take a step back' album. I blew out 2 separate sets of speakers with 'Dopethrone' a few years back. Jesus, what a loud fucking band. So, last week, their brand new record 'Black Masses' appears completely without my knowledge. I don't really keep up with shit like that. I did recently get into their last album 'Witchcult Today' (2007) which some people said was 'too poppy' for the Wiz. When it came out, I was just discovering 'Dopethrone' (2000) so I was kind of behind the times. If 'Witchcult Today' was a little more 'commercial' sounding (it really isn't...just more actual 'songs' and upbeat tempos) then 'Black Masses' is a big ol' 'fuck you up the ass' to anybody who doubted these guys (and girl.)

My immediate reaction on hearing this was 'are the drums supposed to sound like that?' (Yeah, I DID download the album...but that's because I don't buy anything without making 100% sure it's worth my money. This one definitely is.) The answer is, of course. While the Wizard is notorious for using analog gear and vintage amps to make their records, this is the first one that really COULD have come from a time warp. It sounds like they sought out microphones they knew Blue Cheer had fucked up back in the 60's. The drums are COMPLETELY buried by everything else, and the whole thing is distorted to high hell. This is a good thing.

The second thing I noticed is that the second track on the album is called 'Venus in Furs' but isn't a cover of the VU song. This is blasphemy to most hipsters. I hate hipsters, and I really don't like VU much either. Lou Reed is kind of a tool. Plus, that song is boring and this one kicks ass. This is probably one of the best Electric Wizard songs of all time. The vocals are totally fucked, and it sounds like Jus Osborn is trying really hard to sound as evil as possible on this record (something I didn't get from 'Let us Prey'....not their finest moment). Probably because he's tired of hippies being at his shows. Yeah, the Wizard smokes a TON of weed, but no, they don't love everybody (or anybody, for that matter.) Basically, this is the Wizard I loved from nihilistic rants like 'Funeralopolis.'

Another thing (from looking over the lyrics)....Electric Wizard doesn't swear at all anymore, really. This means that you can play ALL their songs on the radio! It was never a huge part of their style anyhow, but I do miss lines like "I hope this fucking world fucking burns away."

These tunes are also really catchy, in the way that 'Dunwich' from their last record was. I hesitate to say 'pop-doom,' but...Let's just say that these guys have realized that they can write songs that have chorus and still beat the shit out of you. Honestly, this stuff can't even really be compared to the classics like 'Come My Fanatics' because it's completely different. The Wizard totally knows how to do a different album every time while still maintaining the important part of their sound (the loudness and lowness)...this is an excellent way to NEVER get bad reviews (unless someone just doesn't like them overall).

Shit, I just hit 'Satyr IX.' This track is slooooooooowwwwww. Hahaha, and I totally just heard the drummer click a stick by accident. That's how you know it's a good record...it's 2010 and these guys don't give a fuck about making mistakes. The average 'modern' band sounds a little too perfect for my taste. Who knew Jus had a singing range like this, either? The ending to this track ('Satyr IX') is totally fucked, too.

I'm really digging the classic Sabbath-style vocal effects on this record. They really went over-the-top with the retro stuff this time around. Holy Fuck: 'Turn Off Your Mind' is a GREAT song. This might be even better than 'Venus in Furs.' Woah. Now there's a really creepy talking break. This album is a lot more 'interesting' than the classic Wizard sound where not much happens, but you like everything that DOES happen. I think they totally borrowed this riff in the second half of the song from somewhere but I can't place it......

OH FUCK, it's the Butthole Surfers...'100 Million People Dead' or whatever it's called. I'm guessing they probably didn't steal from them, but who knows?

Damn, there's a 'fucking' at the end of 'Scorpio Curse.' Too bad, it's a good 'un.

This last instrumental jam 'Crypt of Drugula' is interesting. Not something I'd listen to everytime I put the album on, but not a waste of space either. It's definitely creepy.

Forte 5, another kind-of-fucked podcast

Damn, lots of problems in WIDR world...first the podcast computer's hard drive was full, then the podcasts were sounding fuzzy. It's kind of frustrating, but that's what happens when you use equipment from the 70's (that hasn't been fixed since then either, probably). So, the first 40 minutes of this show sound kind of shitty, but I guess that's alright since I played a lot of lo-fi stuff anyhow. I think by the time it gets into Pig Destroyer's 40-minute sludge track 'Natasha,' everything is sounding fine.

The Frogs - 'CBGayB's 1989'

If you don't like The Frogs or don't think they're funny, then you're a fucking dingus. This is a live recording from (as the title would indicate) CBGB's in the year of 1989 (aka prime Frog years.) Best known as 'that band that Billy Corgan likes,' these guys have been knocking off improv songs (with overdubbed improv lyrics) about being gay, being straight, being murderers, being pedophiles, being black, being KKK members, and basically anything else that is ripe for parody since the early 80's. Starting off as something of a goth-punk band, they quickly abandoned the idea of a show-playing 'real' band in favor of (I'm assuming) doing lots of drugs and fucking around in their house.

And yes, Billy Corgan DOES love them too. He's brought them on numerous tours with the Pumpkins, and even produced their EP 'Starjob' (playing guitar here and there as well.) Although, he apparently doesn't love them enough to have them play at the right time...I went to see the Pumpkins a couple years back on a reunion tour and I paid like 50 bucks for a ticket. Not because I love the Pumpkins (they're alright) but because The Frogs were to be the opening act. However, they played BEFORE the start-time of the show listed on the ticket for some reason, and I missed them (because who shows up 3 hours early to a concert?) Fuck you, Billy Corgan. I will never forgive you for that.

Now then, here are 5 more films that you should probably watch sometime this week, if you're not a pussy.

1. Suspiria, 1977
Wow, what a crazy fuckin' movie. Like a zombie flick on acid (except with witches instead of zombies.) Not only one of the best horror films of all time, but probably one of the best films period. Plus, that soundtrack...Dario Argento is probably one of the first directors to literally sit around thinking about ways people could die that would make the average person cringe by relation (for example, getting bashed to death on the edge of a table in his earlier film 'Deep Red.')

2. Netherworld, 1992While more of a dark suspense movie than a horror film, this is still a Full Moon picture (notorious for their 'what the fuck' series 'Puppet Master') and I watched it a couple weeks ago, and therefore it belongs on this list. It has something to do with Cajun black magic and there's something about a cult of bird people too...I dunno...it held my attention at least. It's good if you're a little bit too much of a sissy to enjoy the bloodier horror films.

3. Nightbreed, 1990
Based on a novel called "Kabal" by Clive Barker, this is one of those titles you'd think would be reaaaallll cheesy, but it's not really at all. It's got some truly bizarre scenes and great costumes. Plus it's all about how monsters are really cool and you should want to be one. Fair enough.

4. I Drink Your Blood, 1970
Remember when pretty much EVERY horror movie was 'loosely based on the Manson family murders?' Me either...a little bit before my time...but I've probably seen the good majority of 'em. This one puts them all to shame. Try this plot on for size: A bunch of drug-crazed, satan-worshipping hippies roll into a really small town (that's in the process of being moved a few miles away due to water contamination? Or something?) and their hippie van breaks down. So, they have satanic rituals, terrorize the locals, and give a a young kid's grandfather acid. To get back at them, the young kid gives them meat pies with rabid dog blood, turning them into RABID, drug-crazed satanic hippies. Hilarity/violence ensues. The effects and acting aren't even that bad to boot! What the fuck? Go see this movie now.

5. The Wicker Man, 1973No, not that bullshit remake with what's-his-stupid-name. This is the original mindblowing film. Whereas 'Suspiria' is ONE of the best horror films of all time, this is probably THE best horror film of all time. You know how Burzum is way scarier than all those fake satanic metal bands, and they don't really talk about anything except pagan shit like nature? This movie is like that. There's no (well, VERY little) actual bloodshed, and the main characters are a seemingly friendly island of pagan folk. However, this movie will creep the hell out of you. There is nothing else like it, and it's so perfect that I can't even understand why some butthole would want to remake it. Watch the original, pretend nobody ever fucked with it, and have a good Halloween.

Fuckin' up yer halloween part 1

I pretty much hate holidays, but here's some Halloween music anyhow.

I did this last year, too.

1. Black Widow - 'Sacrifice'
A whole prog-rock album about the devil and sacrifices and all things of that nature. The songs are surprisingly good, especially 'Come to the Sabbat.' You can download this fucker right here, because I put it up in March.

2. Type O Negative - 'Bloody Kisses'
Even though Peter Steele is dead, he's still scaring new listeners with this album all the time. I think that was supposed to be funny. Anyhow, it's a classic of the 'gothic metal' genre, and an all-around good listen. Check out the video for 'Black No. 1' here.

3. C.A. Quintet - 'Trip thru Hell'
Apparently, a soundtrack for what the title would indicate. I'm not sure if I'm buying that, but there are enough goofy sound effects to at least make this a Halloween Party disc. Plus, it's psychedelic. Who doesn't like Halloween more when it's psychedelic? Download the whole thing from this fine music blog.

4. Lucifer - 'Black Mass'
This album was created by one Mort Garson as an electronic representation of what a black mass probably sounds like. This was in the early days of synthesizers (1973 or something) so it's pretty primitive-sounding, but he gets some really odd fuckin' sounds out of his Moog. If you've ever wondered why some people are really into old Moog music, check out this record. Another good 'Halloween Party' release that's not super loud or super offensive. Download it HERE if you're interested.

5. Kalaschnikov - 'The Torture Never Stops'Daffy fuckin' German metal that sounds like it was composed in three hours. Check out this post to see a little more about the Metal Enterprises record label and how they love fucking metalheads out of $15 bucks here and there. Let's put it this way: This SOUNDS like fake-Halloween-metal. Like the soundtrack to some 1990's teenage monster flick where the kids have to stop an evil spirit or some such bullshit. It's that goofy. Just look at the song titles (when you download it, that is...you're not likely to find this one anywhere but here!) and the album cover. The only positive thing I can say about this album is that you WILL have a good time listening to it.

I'll be doin' a wicked-scary Forte in a couple weeks (or is it a week? I dunno), so tune in for that.

Forte 1

The rumors are true...I've retired the Obscuro! radio program for the time being. It may pop up again sometime down the road, but for now it's finished. I felt that I'd done pretty much all I could within the self-imposed guidelines of the show, and honestly it got a little tiring spending hours digging for crazy shit each week.

That does NOT mean I'll be retiring this website...in fact, I still plan on posting plenty o' wacky music and wacky music compilations...just at my own leisure. From now on, I'll also be posting playlists/podcasts/whatnot to do with Forte, WIDR's 3-hour metal program Friday nights 11-2 am which I have adopted. Obscuro! Mixtape #5...'Thank You and Goodnight'...no rhyme or reason

...got another one of these fuckers for ya. This time, I just threw together some stuff I'd been listening to with some of my favorite tracks from the past few months of the radio show. It made for a nice mix of the 'weird' and the 'regular' so maybe it'll alienate less people than the actual program. Also, it's got quite a few metallic tracks, in honor of my becoming the new host of Forte on WIDR. I titled it 'Thank You and Goodnight' for this reason (plus the consequential ending of my Obscuro! radio program.)

1. Fred Lane - "Rubber Room" - From the One that Cut You, 1976
I'm not sure if that release date is accurate, because this whole thing is a put-on...the guy pretends to be a psychotic lounge singer, and it works pretty well. That's not to say this ISN'T pretty messed up, because you'd have to be a little off to concoct an idea like this anyhow. Apparently, the music is mostly improvised by session players, which gives it an off-kilter, sloppy feel. Words are awesome.

2. Burzum - "Erblicket die Tochter des Firmaments" - Filosofem, 1996 (recorded 1993)
I really don't give a shit what anybody has to say about this guy. Dude is a musical genius, and that's that. It doesn't matter what he believes in, or if he killed anybody (he did) or if he burnt down a ton of historical churches (he did, probably.) Dude is a musical genius. Upon first hearing this song/album, I had the assumption that black metal was a completely badass genre (since Burzum is basically the quintessential black metal band.) That's not true. A lot of black metal is really stupid. Burzum is not.

3. Bobby Brown - "Jungle Cowboy" - Prayers of a One Man Band, 1982
The original surfer-hippie-one-man-band-with-foot-pedals! This is a humorous little tune, which is pretty similar to about half of Bobby's repertoire. The other half is long, spacey cosmic jams.

4. Secret Metal - "The Cop" - Helge's, Girls and Boys (V.A.), 1987
Although I did upload this whole compilation a while back, I just can't get over this tune! Where were the parents?

5. V-3 - "Your Girlfriend" - Negotiate Nothing, 1992
More Jim Shepard, who seems to pop up about every other week on the radio show. I like a lot of this guy's music...other stuff, not so much (the random noise jams I can take or leave.) But, when he sits down and writes a decent tune (like this one,) it's almost always phenomenal. The V-3 album "Photograph Burns" is a really good example of Jim's songwriting abilities, with very little filler. Can't blame the guy, though. He was a depressed heroin-addict factory worker. Sucks.

6. Cathedral - "Enter the Worms" - The Ethereal Mirror, 1993
This is a little more recognizable, eh? Who knew the 'singer' from Napalm Death could tear it up like this? Dude sounds like a more theatrical version of King Buzzo. This whole album is head-nodding, angry-face-driving music and I love it.

7. T. Valentine - "Hello Lucille, Are You a Lesbian?" - Hello Lucile, Are You a Lesbian?, 2000 (recorded sometime in the early 60's)
I don't really know what to say about this...apparently T. Valentine had a nasty breakup with a significant other, and this was how he got back at here. All his other songs are exactly like this, with different subjects and slightly different backing music. Someone said he was like a proto-Wesley Willis, and I won't argue.

8. Emil Richards and the Microtonal Blues Band - "Mantra" - Journey to Bliss, 1968
This stuff is like a really sped-up version of the soundtrack from Twin Peaks (at least the jazzier parts.) Just a nice palate-cleanser between fucked-up and more fucked-up.

9. Jerry Solomon - "First Date" - 45 rpm single, 196x
...and some more fucked-up. Jerry Solomon makes fucked-up music. Seriously. I don't know how he got a backing band on this track, but it's the only one I've heard that's not just him and whatever instruments were lying around. I'm not saying it's bad...because it's not, really. From what I've read, Jerry is a true American eccentric, and his music shows that. It's not something I'd listen to all the time (check out his album "Past the 20th Century," which is even more bizarre than this song) but it's definitely interesting in small doses.

10. Vulcan - "Lightning" - Meet Your Ghost, 1978
Backing story: Lyle Steece (aka Vulcan), upon hearing that Jimi Hendrix had died, decided it was his destiny in life to continue down the musical path which he thought Hendrix was traveling. I don't know if that's what this is, but it sounds like some really fucking distorted proto-metal to me, and I like that just fine. There's stuff about aliens, too...I dunno...dude's a character apparently.

11. The Parasites of the Western World - "Accessories" - S/T, 1978
2 guys attempt to recreate the musical stylings of Rush in their basement. Somehow sound like Chrome instead. Except MORE lo-fi and crazy, if that's possible.

12. Brutal Truth - "Foolish Bastard" - Sounds of the Animal Kingdom, 1997
Angry, stoned grindcore guys from New York. I remember in junior high I had a friend who liked lots of this stuff and I didn't...I hated pretty much everything he played me. One day he played me Brutal Truth and asked if I liked it. I said yes, just to fuck with him and he got really pissed off saying 'you don't like this! you don't like any of this stuff! that doesn't make sense!' They actually are pretty cool, though. Very angular riffs and strange chord patterns make for good (if not easy) listening.

13. Fleetwood Mac - "The Ledge" - Tusk, 1979
I never really gave Fleetwood Mac a chance when I was getting into stuff from the 60's and 70's because a recording/engineering professor told me this cocaine-fueled album cost about 1 million dollars to make and it made me want to puke. So, maybe Fleetwood Mac is the definition of big-budget ridiculousness...at least the product was kind of interesting. I dunno. This album reminds me of 10cc a little and I like 10cc.

14. The Frogs - "Get Yourself a Man (If You're a Man)" - Made Up Songs 1-61, 198x
You want to hear something stupid? I paid 50 bucks for a ticket to see the Smashing Pumpkins on their reunion tour, not because I love the Pumpkins, but because I love the act they chose to open for them...The Frogs. We got to the show right on time, only to find out that The Frogs were forced to play before the actual 'doors opening' time. Way to go, Billy Corgan, you fucking dickbag. You really know how to pay tribute to your influences.

15. Voivod - "Facing Up" - S/T, 2003
More Voivod, although this track is from a more recent album, and not any of the three I've uploaded to this page. Maybe more of the same, but the same is so awesome with Voivod that it's hard to notice.

16. Gary Wilson - "Run Through the Woods" - Lisa Wants to Talk to You, 2008
Yup, Gary's got a new(er) record. Actually, he's got one coming out this year, too. It's not quite as good as 'Mary Had Brown Hair' and it's a little bit more lo-fi (somebody told me this is because he's been using the exact same gear since the 70's without replacing any of it). Still good.

17. J.T. IV - "Destructo Rock" - Cosmic Lightning, 2008 (recorded sometime in the early 80's)
This guy was a punk-rock loner who preferred fucking up his life and taking massive amounts of hard drugs to actually being a musician. Still, some music was recorded...this is a REALLY twisted look at the mind of a sociopath. He died from complications of alcoholism sometime in the late 80's I think. No wonder, once you hear this tune.

18. Striborg - "Digging a Ditch to Die in" - Embittered Darkness, 2006
Bitter and grim black metal from...Australia? Apparently. I guess there are forests there, too. Anyhow, this stuff is really nasty, really poorly recorded, and (it should be obvious) really cool. You couldn't really tell this apart from Norwegian stuff like Mayhem if you tried. Plus, this guy's just got a way about him. The music SOUNDS like a forest. Cool.

I never really thought the whole song-poem thing was that cool...I mean, granted, it's kind of funny to hear amateur poetry over ill-advised 'rock' music, but I wouldn't really sit down and listen to the stuff. Rodd Keith seems to have created the best of these, putting his all into the music and doing a really wide range of styles (although maybe that was due to his rampant drug use)...so, I did a little featurette on him because it's weird stuff and that's what I do. I also played a side-long jam by an anti-government German band that apparently was pretty offensive to all 1 of the people who spoke German and were listening.

Since I just finished compiling a 2-disc collection of the 'best of' my musical project, The HATE Noise, I figured I'd put the download link up here. This is basically a dump for all my ideas that I can't work into a full-band setting, or that are simply too weird. On average, I write about 3-4 songs a week, and only maybe one of those will go on to be played in a full-band setting. The others get recorded (usually) quickly on whatever instruments/equipment are lying around.

These two discs were culled from recordings beginning in 2003 and ending last week (that's about 8-10 80 minute CDR's-worth of material.) This is the result of doing this shit for years but only recently deciding that anybody should hear it.

Odds are, if you've heard my radio program once, you've probably heard The Residents. They're pretty much the only group I've played consistently for the year-and-a-half I've been on the air. That doesn't mean I find all their music listenable (something like 50 fucking albums) and that definitely doesn't mean that I don't think some of their stuff is just plain stupid, but during their heyday (probably 75-89) they produced some really sick and twisted music. Just for an example, here's what their album "Not Available" is all about:

"In 1978, the "official" word was that The Residents had stated that Not Available could never be released. The group claimed that they had recorded the album in secrecy as a way of exercising their "theory of obscurity" to its fullest, and, in strict accordance with the theory, the work could never be released until its creators no longer recalled its existence. However, the reissued album's liner notes state that the album was an exercise in group therapy, and the Residents didn't want to release it because they felt it was too personally revealing." - Wikipedia

You wouldn't think that being away from my radio show for a week would leave me with such a stockpile of new music, but alas. The cool thing is, I only got through about half of it, so that's even less work I have to put into this coming Thursday's show.

Some of my favorite recent finds were this dude who calls himself Vulcan. Apparently when Jimi Hendrix died, he felt it was his duty to continue along the same musical path he thought Hendrix would have been going down, although without the obvious monetary advantage (or, arguably, musical skill...I say arguably because the dude can wail and (I think) he's playing all the other stuff, too. BUT, he might not be as technically skilled as, say, Hendrix). The result is more similar to recent doom-metal groups like Om/Sleep and Boris than anything else. The whole mix is distorted, and slow, trudging riffs are the main focus. In short, the album he released, "Meet Your Ghost" is awesome in every respect (especially the bizarre cover photo).

Also Kali Bahlu, who I can't really describe too much...you'll have to hear that one.

Lastly, I think the Blue's Men will become a fast favorite on the program. Their take on 60's garage rock is a li'l different, to say the least. I dunno where they found that vocalist, but dude is nuts. He sounds like he's doing parody versions of his own band's songs, and I don't mean that in a bad way. I mean he sounds like he got bored with singing the songs over and over and instead chose to get fucked up on heroin before going into the studio to cut his vocals. Screamin' Jay Hawkins can't really even hold a candle to this fucker. I played three tunes by 'em.

"So you thought you heard it all? Well, I bet you haven't heard this one! The Blue's Men were from Argentina and their sole LP release is the rarest 60s beat/garage /weirdo release from over there. The Blue's Men's sound is great garage rock with deranged bursts of fuzztone guitar and bizarre lyrics (in English) with song titles like "The Day the World Fried My Brain" and "Reflections of a Sun Freakout"! This might lead you to think it's psych smaltz but no, no, no it's garage rock and deranged stuff from hell, with a lead singer sounding like Elvis o.d'ing on cough syrup! A one of a kind monster record you need real bad! 10" Ltd 500 copies. " - Subliminal Sounds

Back to full-lengths, for no reason other than I found this album and decided you needed to hear it all. What a goddamn wacky record.

Basically, this guy is really Peter Walker, one-time member of 60's psych group The Purple Gang. He got into witchcraft, Aleister Crowley, and all that stuff, and dropped off the face of the earth for a while. When he returned, he made everyone call him Lucifer and made two very bizarre records, this being the first. He also perpetuated a myth that he was actually a full band recording in an Arizonan cave. Not true. He's a basement weirdo from the UK. And he doesn't have a band. Oh well, this album is pretty obviously the work of one person, with its off-kilter blues-structures, completely mind-fucked LSD vocals, and the general wrong-ness of the whole thing.

If you've enjoyed some of the stranger, less-listenable stuff I play, you'll definitely dig this.

This group doesn't really fit in with the program all that much (although they are a bunch of weirdos no doubt), but this album is so goddamn good that I've just gotta put it up here.

Voivod were/are(?) a thrash-metal band from Canada who decided 'hey, fuck thrash-metal, let's just be wackos!' and ended up sounding (to me, anyways) a lot like if Shudder to Think put on some leather and turned their amps up a little. Odd time-signatures and mind-fuck chord patterns abound, dreamy and very UN-metal vocals, plus their songs stick in your head. How many thrash-metal bands can say that?

I'm in the process of discovering their older/newer albums, but it seems like "Nothingface" might be their strongest. Plus, it's got a wicked Syd-era Pink Floyd cover, so dig it:

Bizarro Jerry's Kutout Bin Klassics, Vol. 4

Time for another installment from the deepest depths of the cutout bin--aka where records nobody wants end up.

For being an out-of-print release, Basehead's 1991 release "Play with Toys" sure seems to be loved by a lot of people.

Recorded on 4-track cassette by college-dude Michael Ivey and whoever the hell was hanging out in his dorm room, this record is basically the most stoned, lazy, half-assed rap disc you'll ever hear (and those are all compliments). Ivey doesn't so much rap as he says things kind of rhythmically, and he doesn't make beats so much as he plays his out-of-tune guitar over store-bought drum machine tracks.

All in all, it's just a really cool, relaxing listen. A lot of people DON'T seem to like his '93 followup "Not in Kansas," (which has a full band and shorter songs) but I think it's pretty rockin' too. I even like Ivey's post-slacker, reborn-christian albums from the mid-nineties to present day (which find him rapping about god AND weed, instead of just the latter). Dude's just got a way about him.

I don't know why more people interested in 'oddball' music don't explore the genre of metal at all. A lot of the websites i dig up my strangeness from don't seem to have any interest in it at all. Luckily, there are a few people out there unearthing the stuff, namely The Corroseum.

For such an 'outcast' genre of music (at least I think so...the majority of people won't have anything to do with metal or metalheads, and 'pure' genres like hardcore punk that helped spawn metal have completely disowned it) you'd think that the metal weirdos and outcasts would be pretty fucked, huh? Exactly.

Why am I telling you this? Mostly because this week's program will feature so-called 'Incredibly Strange Metal.' I did a mini-segment on this a while back, but now I've collected enough to fill a whole 2-hour show!

In celebration of this, I give you Killer Fox's 1990 album "Orgasm of Death."
First of all, what the fuck is up with that cover? Check out the article on The Corroseum for the full story, but here's a summary: A German record label called Metal Enterprises released a bunch of albums by REALLY shitty bands in the late 80's, then did 'fake' follow-ups with a studio band and whoever was around to act obnoxious (after most of the original groups had disbanded or been killed, in the case of Killer Fox, in auto accidents). Why? Probably because it was funny, and to make a few quick bucks. This is pretty standard(?) money-grubbing, I guess (some labels in the 70's were known for doing this, too) but the music is what's really interesting.

I really can't describe it...something like retarded parody-metal taken to a fucking ridiculous extreme. You'll just have to hear it...

I tried something a little bit new this past week...instead of doing a 'theme' or playing an album in its entirety, I played 5 cuts from 2 different albums, in hopes of showcasing some artists while maintaining variety within the playlist.

Seemed to work good...everybody I talked to liked the two records I played sections from, and now the show is yours to download by way of podcast.

The first artist featured was Konrad, a man from Boise, Idaho who concocted a bizarre synth-pop record in the mid-80's. Topics range from how he is a music scientist from the future concocting tunes in a lab, how aliens will never come to earth (again) because people are too stupid, and how his girlfriend likes to buy things which stimulate her mind...it's a pretty wild, low-fidelity ride. His track 'My Girl' has popped up quite frequently on the program, and I was glad to finally get a hold of the entire album. After tracking down 'Konrad' (not his real name), I found him to be a definitely eccentric character, but also really friendly and interesting. Hopefully, once I find time, I will have him as a guest on the program. Also, as if that's all not strange enough, check out the metallic-looking album cover:

Secondly, I featured five tunes by Parasites of the Western World. These two guys were apparently some Rush fans from Ohio who, in the late '70's, attempted to bring their favorite influence to a home recording. What came out sounds much more like Chrome and Pere Ubu than Rush, and I don't mean that in a condescending way at all. Actually, what probably happened was they realized they couldn't recreate the sounds and moods of Rush right off the bat, and morphed their project into something much stranger. I will say right now, this is one of THE coolest records I've ever heard...and not just one of the coolest 'strange' records I've ever found. Definitely worth a spin. Bizarro Jerry's Kutout Bin Klassics, Vol. 3

I first saw this album in a cutout bin when I was in junior high and thought it was the funniest looking rap tape ever. Years later, I tracked down a copy on amazon (for 50 cents) and confirmed this.

This is like the album Pharcyde always wanted to make, but never did because they did too much planning. Loose rhymes, murky beats, and a 'we're high as fuck in the studio' kind of feel dominate this record.

A while back, I spoke with H2O, one of the leading rappers, and he basically told me that initially they were pushed to be a stereotypical gangsta rap group by managers/labels, but after finishing their album found that they didn't like it at all. So, they redid the record, writing new rhymes and beats while still in the studio, and came up with this.

This has some of the downright funniest on-the-fly rhymes I've ever heard ('I'm hefty, hefty, hefty, you're whimpy, whimpy, whimpy/ you ain't got no TV, so you miss Ren and Stimpy'), the most bizarre misogynistic ranting ever ('Check this, last night I broke my fist/ from punchin' this bitch, I missed, twisted my wrist') and a token/tokin' (ha) weed rap that is so accurate it literally falls apart and descends into hilarity.
